Project Title:
Structural Design of a Tendon-Actuated Morphing Aircraft Wing

Project Supervisor: Dr. Mary Frecker

Project Description:

My research focuses on development of design methodologies to achieve aircraft wing morphing. The proposed solution for achieving large wing shape changes is the use of cable actuated truss structures. The cable actuated truss structure will form the internal structure of the wing; such that actuation of cables will produce a shape change in the internal structure thereby producing the required wing morphing. In this work, an optimal design of the internal wing structure is sought. A general design methodology for the optimal design of the internal wing structure is being developed. This methodology employs Genetic Algorithm for topology optimization. Different parameters are optimized in order to achieve a greater control on the final design. Optimal layout of truss and cables and optimal cable actuation is sought.

A different concept of internal structure design using cellular mechanisms with pre-determined topologies for achieving the wing morphing is also being developed.
