Project Title: Design of the Morphing Aircraft Skin

Project Supervisor: Dr. Mary Frecker

Project Description:
I am working on Sandwich structures consisting of contact-aided compliant mechanisms. Contact mechanism is used to alleviate stresses and to allow more deformation. A methodology to design such mechanisms, which takes into account the aerodynamic loads, is being developed. The method is applied to a 1 lb. aircraft and results are compared with a honeycomb structure in terms of structural mass, global strain and maximum stresses. Different material models such as linearly elastic, multi-linear elastic and hyper-elastic are being considered.
